Kandy Esala perahara ☸️❤️

The Kandy Dalada Perehera, also known as the Kandy Esala Perahera, is one of the most vibrant and religious festivals celebrated in Sri Lanka. It takes place annually in the city of Kandy, the cultural capital of the country. The festival, which lasts for ten nights, is dedicated to the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha and attracts thousands of devotees and tourists from all over the world.

The Kandy Dalada Perehera has a rich history dating back to ancient times. It is believed to have been started during the reign of King Kirthi Sri Meghavanna, who ruled Kandy in the 4th century. The festival gained significance when the tooth relic of Lord Buddha was brought to Kandy from India in the 4th century and has been celebrated ever since as a symbol of reverence and honor to Buddhism.

The festival begins with the Kap Situveema ritual, where a sanctified young jackfruit tree is cut and planted in the premises of the four main Devales (temples) dedicated to the Hindu deities Natha, Vishnu, Katharagama, and Pattini. This ritual symbolizes the unity and religious harmony among the different faiths practiced in Sri Lanka. As the ten-day festival progresses, the Perahera becomes more lively and colorful. During the day, there are various cultural performances, showcasing traditional music, dance, and drama. The streets are adorned with bright decorations, and the city comes alive with the beating of drums, the blowing of conch shells, and the rhythmic sound of the traditional brass bands. However, it is during the nights that the main highlight of the festival takes place – the grand procession of the sacred tooth relic. The procession is led by hundreds of traditional Kandyan dancers, drummers, and flag bearers. It starts with the application of various rituals and blessings to the relic at the Temple of the Tooth, known as the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
